CHAPTER 9
It’s been two weeks now since my accident and I’m just about completely healed. I just had my stitches removed and it looks like I’ll be able to cover the scar completely with a little makeup if I want to. I rarely wear the stuff, but it’s nice to know I have the option. My birthday is today and we decide to have it over at Hunter’s and Eli’s so I can finally have my trail ride! I chatter like Josie all the way over there, but Mom is surprisingly quiet, just smiling every time she catches my eye.
We arrive and I fall in love with their place instantly. It is a large plantation-style home that is painted a rich dark brown with dark green trim. Their barn looks like something out of my dreams! It’s two stories with an actual hayloft up top. It is even painted red with white trim and large white x’s painted on the big double doors in the front. I strain my neck trying to get a glimpse of their horses but I don’t see any. Hunter comes out, meeting us at the porch steps. I can smell the BBQ that is cooking around back and it smells heavenly. We go into the house. The living room has an open floor plan with a rock fireplace as the central focal point. Their furniture is all distressed leather couches and recliners with heavy wooden side tables. The floor is brick red Spanish tile and they have a heavy rug in the center that has a pattern of dark red and blues with dark green triangles. It looks very comfortable and cozy and very male.
Eli comes in from the kitchen wearing an apron that says KISS The COOK! It is covered in red-hot chili peppers. I smile and nod at his colorful apron. “Hey, don’t talk smack about my apron! I sewed it myself in home economics my senior year,” he tells me with a smile. I just grin and leave it alone. We follow Eli through the wide doorway that separates the kitchen from the living room. The kitchen is a large kitchen/dining room combo that is a large rectangle with the kitchen on one end and the dining area on the other. I love everything about this house! We go on through the kitchen out a sliding glass back door onto a redwood deck where the grill and picnic table are all set up for my birthday dinner. They have gone all out. I have balloons and a beautiful cake with white daisies, which are my favorite. I thank them for everything, but I keep looking out at the barn and the pastures trying to spot the horses.
Hunter laughs, “Eli, why don’t you and Shelby take that ride first? I don’t think she is going to be able to take it much longer!” I toss a smile of gratitude his way and then Eli leaves to go saddle the horses. In a few minutes he opens the barn doors then leads out two horses and I almost stop breathing.
